Dry shampoo alternatives without benzene!

Looks like we are better off not using dry shampoo anymore. There is a huge spike piling up on lawsuits due to the potential presence of benzene, a contaminant that should not be inside of any beauty product. Why is this happening? This is probably accidental because of supply chain issues, some manufacturers may not be using the best grade petroleum, which is at greater risk for contamination. Benzene is a genotoxic and alters the DNA in various ways that can cause cancer. Studies have shown that exposure to this chemical are linked to certain cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and non-hodgkin lymphoma.

Furthermore benzene has been found to cause abnormalities of the blood and blood-producing tissues. According to the CDC, it can cause the bone marrow to produce less red blood cells and lead to anemia and it can cause damage to the immune system by changing the blood levels of antibodies which leads to the loss of white blood cells.

Unilever issued a voluntary U.S. Recall of 19 dry shampoos due to the potential presence of benzene, including the brands:
  • Dove
  • Suave
  • Tresemme
  • Bed Head
  • Nexxus
  • TIGI

Procter & Gamble (P&G) agreed to pay $8 million as part of a settlement to resolve claims its aerosolized products contain benzene. This includes the brands:
  • Secret
  • Old Spice
  • Pantene
  • Waterless
  • Aussie
  • Herbal Essences
  • Hair Food

Class action lawsuits SO FAR have been also filed against:
  • Batiste
  • Klorane
  • Redken
  • Not Your Mother’s
  • Wella
  • Paul Mitchell
  • OGX

But not only dry shampoo- any aerosol product could contain benzene. As for now it seems it is best to skip any kind of aerosol products: dry shampoo, deodorant or sunscreen.

Bummer! What are alternatives? Here is a fantastic DIY recipe, or you might want to give dry shampoos in a shaker a chance- yes, they are probably more messy, but at least not toxic.

Here are some aerosol-free alternatives:

1. Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-Powder Dry Shampoo Powder // Sephora // Ulta

2. Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo // Sephora // Ulta // Amazon
