Simple skin care routine and makeup secrets of a 50 year old botox-free natural beauty! | BEAUTY OVER 50

Sharon and me on New Years Eve! 👯

I am so exited to share with you today the skin care routine and makeup secrets of my wonderful, beautiful and smart friend Sharon. Her skin is truly beautiful and her unbelievable no-fuss, mostly natural skin care routine surprised me a bunch! Sharon proofs that skin care doesn't have to be expensive and that luxury skin care brands are not needed to keep your skin looking healthy and glowing.

I met Sharon in the late summer of 2018 and we hit it instantly off- and I feel like I know her much longer. We have done so much since then (we danced, have eaten a ton of delicious food, laughed so much and even got crafty) and we have spoken literally about everything you can imagine. I feel so close to her!

Sharon recently turned 50 and she looks simply amazing. She has never done any Botox, fillers or similar. This is all natural! She is a beautiful person- inside and out y'all! She is so selfless and cares for everybody. She has helped me many times and I treasure her friendship!

Anyway, I wanted to share with you a little interview that I did with Sharon to tell you all the details about her skin care routine and all her little makeup tips and tricks.

Gorgeous woman! 😍

It recently snowed here in Georgia and the snow stayed exactly 1 day! 😅

And now let's start our little interview, shall we?

Me: You have incredible skin! I think we all want to know what kind of products you use. Please share with us your skin care routine! Let's start with your morning routine. Which products do you use on your face? Which cleanser do you use? Do you use a serum? Do you use a moisturizer in the morning?

Sharon: Morning time… it’s pretty simple. I keep a pump container of Cetaphil in the shower, so I’ll either use that or Body Merry Vitamin C cleanser for a quick wash, or black soap.

I use DERMA E Ultra Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid (more in winter) [note from me: I use this also!😁],
Neal's Yard Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Serum (summer and winter).
Derma E Vitamin C Renewing Moisturizer. [note from me: I use this too! 😆]

Me: And your evening skin care routine? Which products do you use to take your makeup off? Do you use a serum at night, and do you moisturize your face?

Sharon: To take makeup off I start with coconut oil, all over neck and face to loosen makeup. Then I wash my face with African black soap (not a fancy one -bar usually cost between $5-$10. I slice it up and it last a couple of years). At night I mix Frankincense Carteri Organic Essential Oil
with Molivera Rosehip oil [note from me: Sharon switches brands for her essential oils]. No other moisturizer or serum.

Me: I really love how simple your skin care routine is! You have told me once, that you don't use a special eye cream- can you explain to us why?

Sharon: I don’t really know. I guess because my skin is sensitive, and I don’t like the feel of most of them I’ve tried. The rosehip oil seems to work well for me. I like the oil because it seems to absorb into the skin verses stay on the surface.

Me: Why do you think that natural skin care products are better for your skin?

Sharon: I guess my rationalization is your skin is an organ, so you should treat it as you would food (healthy to eat).

Me: Do you use a product with SPF on a daily basis?

Sharon: I use IT Cosmetics CC Cream with SPF 50. [note from me: me too! 😏] Otherwise Body Merry Vitamin C or CeraVe Facial Moisturizing SPF.

Me: I know you stay out of the sun these days as much as possible, but did you used to tan a lot when you were younger, or did you always try to stay out of the sun?

Sharon: I did lay in tanning bed some when I was in early 20s, but always kept my face covered. Avoided sun between 15-19 (because of a car accident that scarred my face.)

Me: Have you used products that contain Retinol or have you ever used Retin-A and what are your experiences with it? Did you like it or not so much?

Sharon: Periodically in winter I may use tretinoid 0,05%. No more than twice a week for maybe a month. I seem to be too sensitive more than that.

Me: Have you ever had a chemical peel and did you like it?

Sharon: Never. I think I have fears. I kind of think it’s a temporary improvement. There is a reason we have layers of skin. I’m afraid exposing that bottom layer, might be more damaging long term. This is my own rationalization, so not sure of the science.

Me: Have you ever smoked? And if so, for how long?

Sharon: A little in high school, but never as a habit. Never purchased them.

Me: What do you think are the benefits of the serum that you use for your skin?

Sharon: Feels clean gives a good base for make up.

Me: Let's get to your makeup! I think your makeup looks always beautiful. So let's talk about the makeup you use! Do you use a primer? Which foundation do you use and which concealer?

Sharon: No primer, just moisturizer. (Should I ?) I use either Dr. Jart BB (more in summer, if not wearing other makeup) or IT Cosmetics CC cream I blend colors to get correct depending on time of year.

Me: Which mascara is your favorite and why?

Sharon: Almay Thickening (used to be called One Coat). I’ve used it for years. It doesn’t bother my contacts or eyes. I’ve tried many others expensive and inexpensive, and just prefer this one (the way it feels and the look).

Me: What do you use on your lips? (Including your color choices please).

Sharon: Mostly Burts Bees, the sticks the balm etc... Colors: Hibiscus, Sunset Cruise, Rhubarb, can’t read color on the others. (I can’t stand any cosmetic with a smell especially right below my nose).

I do have a few Marc Jacobs lip sticks. Colors: Kiss KISS Bang Bang, Very Cherry, Soft peony.

Me
: Do you use a bronzer or blush? If so, which ones?

Sharon: I don’t use a bronzer. I use Tarte blush. Blushing Bride and/or Natural Beauty.

Me: Which eyeshadow do you use?

Sharon: Tarte Tartelette clay matte palette. The colors I use mostly free spirit (crease to lash, caregiver crease to brow, natural beauty is cross crease, bombshell over liner (to soften and set), bestfriend to blend liner to crease line. I use dreamer in eyebrow.

Me: You told me once about a trick that you use to achieve bigger eyes with your eyeliner- can you tell us what you do? Which eyeliner do you use?

Sharon: I extend my liner up toward corner of my brow, just past crease line. Then blend colors (see answer to last question).

Me: Any other makeup tips or tricks for us?

Sharon: I don’t use a setting powder, I think it makes me look older. I would rather have shine. Use something to absorb shine instead.

Me: Any other skin or makeup products that you love and haven't told us about?

Sharon: I had a black eye once. Best coverage was Cover FX orange [note from me: product discontinued- try instead Smashbox Color Correcting stick in orange] with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder for Under Eyes.

Use: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Full Coverage Anti-Aging Concealer when needed. [note from me: one of my favorite concealers too! ✊]

ULTA Ultra Slim Brow Pencil -dark brown.

Almay eye liner crayon/black pearl.

Me: That's a wrap! Thank you so much for telling us all about your skin care routine and the makeup products you use, Sharon!

Sharon: You´re welcome. I don’t think I’ve ever had to think so much about my routine before. I’m not an expert, I just do what works for me. Many of my devotions are based on the feel and the smell. I don’t use anything with perfume; so that is where I start, when trying a new product.

I forgot one more thing about Sharon: she is funny too, as you can see in this video with her (also beautiful) daughter "10 German words non-Germans can't pronounce!" 😂

You can follow Sharon on Instagram too!

That's it for today! Happy Sunday y'all!
